After being so scared of “blogging”, without any reason other than the unknown, I have come to love reading what others write and find myself relating to many. Love not being the only one who feels a certain way about different issues. I came across this blog by fellow student Tara and I realised that it is so true, have we become so reliant of ICT that we have a melt down when we can not access it for whatever reason.
I too am guilty of this, I left my phone at home, by accident, two times in the last three weeks, now I don’t normally get phone call through the day but I felt so lost without it, almost in a panick. And it applies to the classroom too, how often is the internet down or YouTube takes forever to load, I think more often than not there is no Plan B. Don’t get me wrong, I love that there is so much technology that can be accessed and it has made a world of different in the special education classroom, it has truly given these children the opportunities, that they have never had, to be participants in the classroom. I speak especially of children with ASD when I say this, their routine is the most important key to successfully being able to engage them in learning as it keeps them calm and they know what is happening. I have been in the situation where something, like the internet being down, has had to be different and the whole day is a write off. There needs to be a combination of high technology and low technology (basic paper form) in the classroom, so that those times when all else fails, plan B is available and successfully implemented.
